T-756.01.032 [2024-08] Aldehyde-containing disinfectants

The disinfecting effect of aldehyde products is due to the reaction with various functional groups of the cell proteins of microorganisms, primarily through direct reaction with terminal amino groups. By combining different aldehydes or aldehydes with quaternary ammonium compounds, the disinfecting effect and range of application is increased.

Application/Purpose

Determination of the aldehyde concentration in disinfectants.

Scope of Application

Suitable for all solutions containing aldehydes.

Principle

Aldehyde-containing agents are oxidized by iodine to the corresponding acid:

R-CHO + I2 + 2 NaOH

R-COOH + 2 NaI + H20

The iodine not used for oxidation is re-titrated with sodium thiosulphate.
