R-110.23.020 [2016-03] Thousand Kernel Weight for Barley

Physical tests including the sieving test, thousand kernel weight and hectoliter weight are a part of the barley analysis required by the German Bundessortenamt (federal authority responsible for varieties and seed affairs) for the evaluation of new malting barley varieties.

All of the varieties registered for approval are subject to orthogonal testing over a three-year period of evaluation. The data for newly approved malting barley varieties can be found on the homepage of the Bundessortenamt (www.bundessortenamt.de) and are also published in the Braugerstenjahrbuch (Malting Barley Annual, published by the Braugerstengemeinschaft e. V., www.braugerstengemeinschaft.de).

Application/Purpose

This method describes how to determine the thousand kernel weight of barley.

Scope of Application

Barley intended for the production of malt is evaluated on the basis of the thousand kernel weight.

Principle

This test is based upon determining the number of barley kernels in a subsample of a defined weight, i.e., the calculation of the weight of 1000 kernels of barley.
