1. MEBAK® Chairman, Prof. Frank-Jürgen Methner, is now a “young retiree”

March 28th 2019 was an auspicious day, one that saw Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank-Jürgen Methner of the Technische Universität in Berlin (Professor of the Institute for Food Technology and Food Chemstry – Brewing Science) and Prof. Lothar Kroh (Institute for Food Technology and Food Chemstry) officially relinquish their duties at the university. The Dean of TU Berlin, Prof. Drusch, was at the ceremony to formally usher them into retirement. The two professors are connected through their research on the Maillard reactions.

Reiner Gaub, who has known Prof. Methner since his days as a student in Berlin, gave the laudatory speech. Gaub began by tracing Methner’s professional career. After completing his university studies, Methner’s path took him to Düsseldorf, where he worked in the quality control department at the Schlösser Brewery, then back to Berlin to earn his doctorate and finally over to the Bitburg Brewery, where he was responsible for the areas of technology and development from 1987 to 2004.

In 2004, Prof. Methner succeeded Prof. Karl Wackerbauer as head of the institute at the TU Berlin. There, Prof. Methner developed new analytical methods, systematically compiled empirical test results and wrote numerous patents. Furthermore, he still found time to help organize the “Trends in Brewing” Symposium and to collaborate with Wifö (Wissenschaftsförderung der Deutschen Brauwirtschaft), FEI (Forschungskreis der Ernährungsindustrie) and MEBAK® in a voluntary capacity.

A total of 277 scientific publications, masters’ theses, doctoral theses, along with more than 100 lectures and posters presented at international events, reflect his work as head of the department at the university.

As a balance to his professional life, Prof. Methner found time to pursue physical activity – participating in marathons and long racing bike tours.

Prof. Methner has held the position of Chairman for MEBAK® since April of 2016 and will continue in this role. Among other aspects of the affairs associated with MEBAK®, Prof. Methner found the strategic direction of the organization to be extremely important. This allowed him to attract young, established experts from the fields of business and science who were willing to volunteer their time and expertise in honorary roles for MEBAK®.

The members of MEBAK® wish Prof. Frank-Jürgen Methner and his family all the best, especially good health, for the years to come.
